Obama Family Can Adopt a Portugese Water Dog

photos: Chip Pearson

Dear President Obama and the whole Obama family,
I know you're not used to getting emails from dogs but please, please hear my plea. I heard you wanted a Portugese Water Dog and I found one on PetFinder for you. She's in Minnesota and her humans couldn't keep her anymore so she ended up in the shelter like I used to be. She's gorgeous, she's nice and she loves kids.
Can you give her a chance? Like so many Americans in these hard times, she's homeless. I don't usually get my hopes up too much but you changed all that with your election. So now I'm full of HOPE that you will look at WEMA and reach out to her. With one act of kindness , you will be, yet again, an example of hope for the hopeless, an example of compassion to your kids, an example of wisdom to the country. By adopting a homeless dog, you will change the way Americans bring dogs into their lives.

Give WEMA a chance.

Meet Wema, the Portugese Water Dog. Wema means goodness, kindness and compassion in Swahili. Wema is young and healthy and homeless, like millions of dogs in our nation's shelter system. And like so many Americans today, she is a victim of financial hardship. Her people couldn't afford to keep her anymore. Now she waits with hope in her heart for a new family to love.

Wema is gentle, well-behaved and loves children and other animals. She even enjoys a game of toss the ball with herself!

Portugese Water Dogs are exceptionally intelligent and willing to please. They make excellent family companions and love the country as well as the city. They are sturdy and strong but gentle and affectionate. " Porties" are elegant and refined but love to play. Portugese water dogs are also known to be hypoallegenic, with a soft curly coat that allows people with allergies to enjoy their companionship.

This athletic and sweet-natured young lady deserves only the best and she is currently being spayed and vaccinated.
She can be reached at the Martin County Humane Society in Minnesota.

Call Wema!

I cannot begin to express how much happiness I would feel to see the Obama's adopt this dog. I live only 15 minutes from the shelter she is from. It would be such an honor for this dog to become a "First dog." from a smaller city. I cried when reading the paper this morning, with joy, that the Obama's MAY touch the life of this dog, who needs a home. I have been to the shelter many times, and it allways breaks my heart to leave these little ones behind( I have enough of my own..lol) and see them wait yet another day of not having someone to cuddle at night, to hug them during the day and so forth. It would mean so much to those familar with this shelter to have the President's family adopt Wema, and give hope. Not to mention, those that surrended her to the shelter I am sure would have such a great weight lifted from thier hearts knowing that surrending this pet,due to financial circumstances, that thier loved one will go to a wonderful home. What a statement, and a change for the better for one living creature to come out well from the finacial turmoil our country faces.Small starts can become great wonders.

Does anyone know what exactly has been done to let the Obama family know that there is one of the breed they have considered adopting available in a shelter right now? Was just this email sent from jinky?

Does this dog actually have any hope of being adopted by the Obama family?

Can the author let us readers know how this is going and if the Obama family actually knows of this dog?

I certainly hope the Obama children don't check out this website...good grief...the profanity used and down right nasty commentary on here is appalling. How sad to see such a site used to promote animal rights need to use such vulgarity in thier approach. I appreciate the site, but, goodness....perhaps it could be toned down abit in case children want to view also.

To answer some of your questions, Jinky does not have a direct access to the Whitehouse, unfortunately. Any help you can give to promote Weba is appreciated.
For the anonymous writer who is upset with the "profanity" on this website, I apologize if it offends you but I do not see this site as profane at all. Jinky is a smart ass and I don't believe in censorship. Words are only bad if they are used intentionally to hurt others. Obviously, this is not the case on this website.
Jinky has saved many lives with his message of compassion for shelter animals and other animals in mills, laboratories, zoos war zones etc. Sometimes there is salty language in this world. It exists and the truth is what matters. If you don't like it, you can close the window! Presto!

Hello, we just found your blog and will follow it if you don't object! We would guess that the Obamas have professionally trained dog-expert staff appointed just to vet the candidates for First Dog ... and we are sure that they know about Petfinder! Wow wouldn't that be cool if Wema was adopted by them? But we think they are looking for a puppy ... any homeless dog that ends up in the White House makes one less homeless dog!

Awesome Blog!

I currently share my life with two ex-mill mommas and Greta, who is also a rescue dog but not likely from a mill.

They are my therapy and best friends.

I'm also working with a few corporate rescue groups and wellness advocates to produce a program called "With a Little Health from My Friend" that explains the health benefits of animal companionship to humans....Stay Tuned. I think you'd be a great speaker for us...

Yes, Jinky is a smartass, and he's helped to save lots and lots of dogs and raise awareness with his salty commentary.

Children, no matter whose, shouldn't have unsupervised romps on the internet.

What happened to Wema? I just read Wema won't be running in the campaign any longer...anybody know what the sudden change came from? It's hard to believe people worked so hard to promote Wema and now, poof, she is no longer going to have a chance at the White House. Sounds is really weird in that.

Your blog is hilarious. Thank you for giving a voice to those without a voice. I hope the Obamas find Wema, but regardless I hope she finds a wonderful home somewhere White House or not!
