Uh, just wondering, with all this holiday "cheer" going on, why Santa doesn't go to favellas in Brazil and kinda steers clear of Uganda and Ivory Coast and sort of avoids kids in Eritrea, Darfur and Somalia.

I don't know, am I crazy? All this celebrating Jesus doesn't seem to bring reindeer to kids who might like to see them or any kind of presents, not even a glass of clean water. There was a sighting of a Santa in Zimbabwe but Mugabe thugs had him beaten up along with the reindeer. Rudolf got a red nose---a bloody one, and the rest were poached by American members of Safari Club International.

I think if Santa, or worse, Mrs Santa, tried to come down a chimney in Cairo, she might get stomped on and raped. If the little green elves decided to sashay into Saana, they might be executed for seeming gay. Hmm...come to think of it, elves better stay clear of Lagos too, with the new legislation that makes boys in green tights subject to a firing squad.

Christmas is just a really weird human holiday to me. Being a former death row dog gives me a different yuletide perspective. MILLIONS of dogs are locked up in puppy mills right now while their pups are loaded onto trucks for the long trip to a creepy dog dealer in a mall.

Deck the trucks with pups and holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Puppy Mills are not so jolly. Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Millions of other dogs and cats are going to be killed at the pound because people won't come to adopt them in time for Christmas. And I don't even want to count all the ducks and pigs who are getting the worst Xmas of all--- getting carved up and served on a plate. Ew.

It turns out that even people who seem to have everything are lonely enough to kill themselves on Christmas more than any other day.

I sure wish everyone would do something nice for somebody this Christmas and not depend on that fat elitist bastard who is posing as some kind of philanthropist in a red suit. Santa. What a phony.

Hi, I'm Jinky, a dog who was rescued from death row in a Los Angeles shelter so around this time of year, I'm dreaming of an ethical Christmas.

If you want a dog or a cat or any kind of pet this holiday season, get into the real spirit of Christmas by GIVING a second chance to a homeless animal.

When you buy a dog from a pet store or Internet seller, you are only enriching animal abusers. Those dogs come from factories, or, as they are often called, puppy mills, where the parent dogs are living out their sad lives in a cage. The puppy you see on the Internet or in the pet store is the product of an incredibly cruel business---where pups are manufactured like machine parts with no regard to their well-being. The parent dogs are exposed to freezing temperatures and get no socialization.

Don't be fooled: Just because a commercial breeder has a USDA license or breed registry "papers" doesn't mean the breeding facility is humane. If a pup is sold over the Internet or in a pet store, he is from a puppy mill and puppy mills are legal just like chicken factories are legal. To the United States Department of Agriculture, dogs are just an agricultural product.

I think dogs deserve better. After all, we are man's best friend!

There are lots of really great dogs at the pound! It's hard to believe that all those homeless dogs and cats aren't going to have a family for Christmas unless somebody comes and adopts them. So this holiday season, go to your local rescue organization or shelter and rescue a homeless animal. Get into the holiday spirit and take the $1000 you would have spent on a dog and give it to a family in need so they can have a nice Christmas.

I Heart Puppies in Corona del Mar has been in hot water this month with many animal lovers and on Tuesday was required by the city to temporarily close its doors.

Problems for the pet store began on July 5, just a few days after it opened, when the Companion Animal Protection Society—a national nonprofit, investigative group—launched a probe into the store after receiving numerous complaints from residents. Carole Davis, the organizations's West Coast director, said the investigation has led to information that showed I Heart Puppies did not have proper permits to have a pet store with live animals and resulted in the store's temporary closure.

"I went into the store last week and did an inspection," Davis said. "I noticed there was no sprinkler system or any kind of alarm that would hook up directly to the Fire Department in case of an emergency.

"We alerted building and safety, the Fire Department and City Council in Newport Beach that they were in violation of state law," Davis said.

Councilwoman Nancy Gardner said she was aware of the order being issued by the city due to building safety violations.

"Yes, it is my understanding that as soon as the store owners were notified of the requirement, they proceeded to rectify it," Gardner said.

How it started

The investigation does not claim I Heart Puppies has abused animals, but implies that the problem is they are being supplied by substandard commercial breeders in the Midwest that have repeat and multiple violations from USDA inspections violating the Animal Welfare Act.

Suzanne Bradford, owner of I Heart Puppies, did not return phone calls or emails seeking comment Tuesday, but last week she refuted the claims of the animal group and said she does not support illegal kennels or those with a history of problems meeting USDA requirements. Instead Bradford claims I Heart Puppies gets its animals from Critters and Pets in San Diego.

"We cannot find any USDA license for the broker they say they use. In fact, we can't find them at all," Davis said. "The 36 San Diego area USDA brokers all have R licenses, meaning they broker dogs to be used for research experiments. That's creepy."

According to Davis, the breeder that supplied the Corona del Mar store is the same breeder that was investigated in a two-year national probe. The breeder is not in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and is part of the reason for an ordinance being drafted in Los Angeles that would ban puppy mill puppies citywide. Additionally, that investigation led to an ordinance being passed in West Hollywood that states that stores can sell only dogs and cats that come from a local municipal shelter system or a legitimate rescue organization.

Davis said she would provide the City Council with a full investigative report

When puppy mill dogs are sold in pet stores, then puppy mills continue to exist. They inflict extreme cruelty on their dogs, all in the name of profit. And thousands of dogs in shelters continue to be killed. If this store "went humane", that is, held adoptions of rescue and shelter dogs, they would be part of the solution.

I am so glad that Ms. Davis is investigating this slimy business. It's one thing to be ignorant, but to be provided with info that your puppies are coming from cruel conditions and then defend your practices.... I cannot fathom how these people sleep at night. I think it is fantastic that the store is closed down until it becomes up to code, but I would be happier if it shut down for good or adopted a humane model.

To clarify:
1. The L.A. investigation of pet stores and mills that supply them included an "I Heart Puppies" breeder. That breeder sells dogs to many pet stores in CA. We had already investigated this breeder and visited her factory 3 x. She is the breeder who shot a Golden Retriever in the head. THAT investigation and its findings were given to WEHO City Council, LA City Council and Glendale council in order to assist them for their anti-puppy mill ordinances (WEHO passed and L.A. & Glendale are in process of drafting the legislation).

2. The Broker that I Heart Puppies claims to use is unknown. Ms. Bradford told me that the broker only uses 2 pet stores and NO broker uses 2 pet stores. That's impossible. He'd make more $ babysitting. She told me the broker is in San Diego. The 36 USDA license holders in the SD area are all R licenses. These are research facilities! So if she is dealing with that kind of facility, then that is just heinous.

3. RE an anti-puppy mill ordinance for NB: We are not so presumptuous as to tell local CDM and NB law-makers how to run their beautiful city. All we do is provide them with the investigative findings and recommendations for a more humane city regarding companion animals. We were responding to requests from residents to look into CDM because they know of our work in L.A., Chicago and NY. CDM and NB residents are very aware of puppy mills and it is up to them to discuss this with their city officials.

As I type this, breeding dogs in the kennels that are USDA inspected are dying in the midwest heat. I visited this store and the breeders are all mass breeding facilities, yes USDA, legal blah blah. Their answer to every question, one being "do you think it's O.K. for dogs to live in a cage their whole lives" was it's USDA inspected. USDA is minimal standard care, now the question is "CDM do you have compassion?" They are selling a chihuahua, go to the O.C. shelter and see the hundreds of chihuahuas needing to be rescued, yes they will be killed. Why don't these women rescue them and sell these dogs and give them a chance? The answer being they buy puppies for $200-250 and sell for $1500, dogs at the shelters are $85, fixed/shots and you save a life. If you buy a puppy from these heartless women you are a dummy! FYI every breed as a rescue. Local Breeders are puppy mills too, my survivor was rescued from a 400 dog facility in Lancaster, CA, yorkies had rope stiches hanging from their belly, no difference. Please don't support this cruelty. Why do they have to sell animals, why don't they sell cute supplies and sponsor a rescue group? BECAUSE THEY ARE GREEDY!

Get those puppies a loving home, then shut down this retail end of the killing assembly line. I am shocked and appalled that CDM would even permit such a business, yet this is what happens when towns get desperate for revenue. People just sign off on things without proper due diligence...even if the moral compass couldn't vote it down all on its own. Shutting a place like this down is so important to overthrowing those puppy milling factories and protect the suffering animals supplying these stores, overloading society, and creating a tax burden for citizens. Who's addressing this? Who's thinking of shelter animals and those on death row?

The women who own this store are well aware that they are supplying their store with puppy mill dogs.
How do they sleep at night?

If I Heart Puppies was up & running with no fire safety in place, either someone wasn't doing their job and/or palms were greased. The owners had to knoiw this. Now they defiantly support cruel puppy mills and refuse to promote rescuing shelter dogs that will die? These women know exactly what they're doing...greedy, cold-hearted bitches! Shut them down and let someone humane take over this store and promote shelter pets...they desperately need to be seen and saved! Don't be cruel by supporting any store that gets the dogs they sell from anywhere other than shelters/rescue groups. You can find any pet you want from shelters/rescues.

To be fair, Flaxenmare, I don't think they knew about the regulations regarding fire safety. That said, it was their job to educate themselves and to use common sense and not put animals at risk that way.

What is revealing is that they do not admit making mistakes. I think ethical people who are confronted with facts such as selling puppies from a breeder who shot a dog in the head, would immediately change course, admit wrong-doing and try to make amends. Instead, they continue to repeat the lie that they are selling from "reputable" breeders.

They could easily turn this around by putting up ALL their animals for adoption with a local rescue org and changing their business model to be rescue only. Plenty of wonderful pets at the OC shelter, all being killed because of stores like hers.

That's correct, Ace. It is the responsibility of the owners of I Heart Puppies to ensure the safety of the puppies they sell. They are doing the bare minimum by installing an alarm. The fire safety official told me that "an alarm does nothing to protect the animals like a sprinkler system would" but the owner of this store doesn't want to cut into her profit margin to keep those pups safe. Maybe they should sell stuffed puppies instead.

Caps undercover investigation of a Midwest commercial breeder that supplies southern CA pet stores. This breeder is USDA licensed and is a multiple and repeat violator of the Animal Welfare Act.

A national animal rights group has launched an investigation into the newly opened I Heart Puppies shop in Corona del Mar.

The store, which opened Friday, may have puppies for sale that come from “an egregious violator of the Animal Welfare Act,” said Carole Davis, West Coast director for the Companion Animal Protection Society. She declined to say how she obtained her evidence, but she said it includes undercover video footage of the breeder’s facility and “is not hearsay.”

“I have evidence this breeder supplies the Corona del Mar store,” she said.

The shop’s owners said they stand by their stated mission to get puppies from reputable breeders.

Co-owner Suzanne Bradford said the shop’s puppies come from breeders who in compliance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “which, as we all know is the agency that inspects the countries food supply. So I think it makes sense that if we trust the USDA to make sure our food is safe for us and our families, we would also trust them with their responsibility of regulating commercial dog breeders,” Bradford said.

Davis said she launched the investigation Tuesday after receiving 30 complaints about the store in one weekend. Typically, she sees that many complaints in a month, she said.

According to Davis, the Corona del Mar shop has puppies from at least six breeders, one of which has been investigated by the USDA and by the CAPS group since 2006.

Davis declined to name the breeder, but she said she had reports from her internal investigations and from the USDA that described dogs living in broken wire cages with no bedding, outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. Water bowls were missing, frozen over or contaminated with feces and urine, Davis said.

“The reports are really disturbing,” she said. One report said the dogs were in cages 3 feet off the ground, “and underneath is so much fecal matter that you would have to wear a mask,” she said. Any pet shop owner who visited this particular breeder “would leave in tears,” she said.

The breeder is located in the Midwest, she said. The violations and terrible conditions occurred in that location and not in Corona del Mar.

“We are not accusing stores of abusing animals,” Davis said.

A complete CAPS investigation could take up to six months, she said. “We inspect, we talk, we get inside, we observe, we talk to people who’ve bought animals, we talk to veterinarians,” she said.

Her goal is to work with the I Heart Puppies shop to convince them to work with local shelters to set up a “humane business model” rather than purchase dogs through brokers who may be getting dogs from unethical breeders. The shop’s owners have said they plan to include an adoption element to their business plan.

When the investigation is complete, Davis said she would send the results to members of the Newport Beach City Council with a request to change city code to ban shops from selling dogs that do not come from local shelters. According to the CAPS website, the group in 2009 successfully worked with four Los Angeles pet shops to convert them to humane business models that work with rescue centers to find homes for adoptable pets. In 2010, the website states that a CAPS undercover investigation resulted in the West Hollywood City Council passing an ordinance prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores with an exemption for the adoption of shelter and rescue animals.

“CAPS is currently working with Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) on an ordinance for La Mesa (San Diego County), CA and assisted Richmond, British Columbia animal advocates on a by-law banning the sale of pet shop dogs,” the website states.

Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Gardner, who represents Corona del Mar, said she was surprised to learn the shop was selling puppies “given the climate today,” but she had not received any calls or emails complaining about the business.

CAPS’ goal is to put inhumane dog breeders out of business by cutting off their sales, Davis said.

“We want to make it so they don’t have a place to sell their dogs,” Davis said. “We want to take away their outlets so they will decide to get a job that doesn’t include animal cruelty. That’s who we’re mad at.”

The shop, located at 2801 East Coast Highway, also sells pet supplies, puppy apparel, leashes and more.

“As far as what Companion Animal Protection Society thinks of the business model for I Heart Puppies, we believe we have a wonderful concept that puts beautiful healthy puppies in loving homes,” Bradford said. “We are very excited about the wonderful response we have had to our store, people appreciate what we have to offer the community and we look forward to providing the area with loving healthy puppies.”

Paris Hilton: Buying live animals and wearing dead ones. So not hot.

Watching Paris Hilton's new show, "The World According to Paris Hilton" is about as boring as watching flies buzz around a dog poop. The humans who watched that flop are no different than those flies--all 400,000 of them. She doesn't have the class of a city like Paris. She's barely Burbank Hilton. In fact, she's no Hilton either---she's more like Burbank Days Inn.

Just look at this pathetic picture of her with her genetic disaster of a horse. I feel sorry for this miniaturized horse. He was bred and sold to satisfy dummies who like to throw away money more than they like horses. This sad little horse is now forced to hang around under hot lights with celebritard Paris Hilton and her over-paid crew of human parasites. Is Paris going to neglect this horse like she did the Chihuahua who died in her closet? Or like the cat she never picked up from the hospital and abandoned?

I hope her miniature horse pees in her Louboutin shoes. May her underwear be invaded by 10,000 ticks.

And what the hell is she wearing around her neck? Is that a dead coyote, or is it one of those unlabeled Korean fur collars you find in Beverly Hills that is actually a dead dog? (Maybe she was too busy shopping to read about the new Truth in Fur Labeling Act signed by President Obama that went into effect in March.) Newsflash, Paris: people who love animals don't wear them.

On The View, Paris and her Mom (who looks like a ginormous wax tchotchke), sounded like a couple of runny-nosed whine-up dolls. Showing her talent for reciting a sentence written for her by someone sober, Paris said, "This show is more different than anything on TV. The show shows a lot more than just shopping. It shows everything involved."

"Everything involved?" With what? Shopping? And for what? More dogs and pink Bentleys and furs? I guess she doesn't notice all the homeless people and homeless dogs begging for food in L.A...she just drives by in her pink Bentley on the way to...more shopping. That's so hot.

She says she loves Chihuahuas but let me tell you something I know a lot about because I'm part Chihuahua and an ex death row dog myself: people who love dogs don't buy them like she does. People who love animals rescue them. She has 17 unfixed dogs that she breeds "to give away as gifts." That makes me, an ex-pound dog, really mad because millions of us get killed at the pound every year. Are rescued Chihuahuas not good enough for her? Doesn't she understand that if you don't fix 17 dogs and let them mate that she will be breeding dogs with congenital malformations and diseases? I know she can feel the stinging shame of not being "hot" enough to grab more than 409,000 viewers for her new show.

Jack Kevorkian went bye bye today and a lot of humans don't know what a great guy he was. He was a hero and some dumb humans condemned him as a criminal. There are some really creepy humans who put Mr. Kevorkian in prison for trying to help people. I hope they understand that they did a very bad thing. Somebody should ram their noses in their own poop right now. May they be bitten by 10,000 fleas. I hope their underwear in invaded by ticks.

I wish those people thought about how terrible it would be if we dogs didn't have the right to humane euthanasia. In the end, when I can't enjoy a walk, a meal or simply enjoy sitting in the sun without being in pain, I know that it is legal to just give me shot and I can slip away peacefully, knowing that I was loved.

The wild Life in Catalina is often dead

Recently, I took my mother to beautiful Catalina. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous Catalina bison and were looking forward to our Discovery Tour of Catalina’s interior and wildlife.

We had only driven a short distance when I spotted two deer. We asked our tour guide to slow down so that we could photograph the deer with her little one. “We hunt ‘em,” he said. “Gotta keep those numbers down.” “Wouldn’t it be more humane to control the population with birth control instead of shooting them,” I asked. He answered by putting his foot on the gas.

Further up the hill, we felt lucky to see about twenty bison grazing in the distance. It was an extraordinary scene we all wanted to savor. Our tour guide didn’t agree. In fact, he made his disdain quite clear, “There they are,” he said, “doing exactly what they always do—NOTHING.” And again, he sped away from the scene.

A little farther along, I spotted a bald eagle perching on a branch. We were all impressed with the majesty of America’s national bird, unique to North America. Not our guide, “It’s a good thing they’re protected,” he said, “because they wake me up in the morning. I’d like to get one!” Of course, if he did kill a bald eagle, a protected species, that would make him a criminal, not just a bad tour guide.

Passing the reservoir, our guide bragged of his killing “two-hundred bass in one day here!” We wondered if that was even legal. We also wondered who could eat two-hundred fish in one day. We don’t know people who eat two hundred fish in a year.

Halfway through the tour, our guide dropped us at the airport, where we were encouraged to shop for knick-knacks in the lounge and enjoy the views from the airport’s perch atop the island. And there, in the lounge, we finally got to spend a leisurely half hour with a bison—dead on a wall, over the fireplace--a cruel and gruesome trophy. Stuffed wild “life” — not what we came to see.

What we discovered on our Discovery Tour was a shockingly oblivious attitude towards animals. It’s a shame that the “voice of Catalina” on our tour, our guide, showed such little respect for the living splendor of Catalina. Somebody needs to educate him before he talks to any more visitors. I’m not calling for him to be fired because, unlike him, I have empathy for other living creatures.

I’ll be back because I love Catalina…especially its animals.

A Dog's Rant About Liz Taylor

Liz Taylor was a great actress, I'll give you that. And she raised a lot of money and awareness for victims of HIV AIDS. But, like the rest of us, she wasn't perfect.

I know you're supposed to revere celebrities, especially dead celebrities, but I'm a dog so I don't roll like that. A dog doesn't have to be politically correct. So I'm going to say it.

This old actress had an awful lot of dead animals in her closet. This movie star that everybody is crying about today owned more fur than the entire country of Tanzania.

I looked at hundreds of pictures of her today and she looked like she really liked sweltering and posing with dead animals. There are a few pictures of her with little furry live animals, and they all look more like the property of the prop department at Paramount than her friends.

There are some pictures of her with a store-bought Maltese dog, but never the same dog! It's like she would buy one for a "roll" down a red carpet and then, when the carpet ended, so did the dog. What happened to all those Maltese dogs? Didn't they ever get get old?

And, the few pictures of her with bunnies and puppies are way outnumbered by pictures of her draping dead animals over sequins, beads and gold lamé.

Right up to the end, like at her last birthday party, there she was, wheeled into the spotlight, draped in two dead, white foxes. Ouch. You know, foxes are trapped and they lie there dying for days sometimes before they are skinned alive. "Hey, Liz! Thanks for bringing us to the after party!"

I know a lot of people were dying to have their picture taken with Liz but way too many foxes, chinchillas, lynx, minks and coyotes literally died to get their picture taken with her.

And what about her obsession with diamonds? Liz Taylor had a lot of diamonds. Liz Taylor liked diamonds so much she named her perfume, Diamonds! Did she know how much blood has been shed for diamonds? Did she not know how many child laborers have had their hands chopped off for diamonds? That's why they call them blood diamonds!

"I'm so happy I have Diamonds and fingers!"

Her favorite diamond, the 33 karat Krupp, had belonged to a guy whowas accused of war crimes against Jews during the holocaust. Richard Burton gave her that big, shiny, holocaust memorial-diamond and she seemed to think it looked really splashy with her dead foxes. Set against the fur, it sparkled like a million paparazzi bulbs.

Almost everybody admires Liz for her fundraising for AIDS research and yeah, that's cool to want sick people to get better. But from my point of view, a dog, I'm sorta wondering what kind of hell those pregnant monkeys were living in when the vivisectors from NIH were injecting them with the AIDS virus. Did Liz ever ask what happened to all those animals who were tortured for the medical research she was promoting? I don't think so. I'm surprised she didn't ask for their fur. A monkey's coat wouldn't even require that much "Liz Tailoring." Hm....

And everybody is talking about how loyal she was. I'm a dog; I know loyal. It means sticking with one person through thick and thin. How could Liz be loyal to eight husbands? Sounds more like a home-wrecker to me. i guess she was loyal to Michael Jackson. She stood by him and not his victims. She never wavered in supporting him instead of the children he molested.

"I'm not a monster! I'm NOT," she yelled in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf. She won an Academy Award for that, but I think she was type-cast.

I see dumb people. There are an awful lot of dumb people gas-bagging on T.V. but Whoopi Goldberg gets the prize for being the most selfish, ignorant gasbag of the week.

I watched Whoopi Goldberg on the View gassing on and on about how “you don’t know what you’re getting when you get a “pookie-dingle-doodle” from the pound. She was saying that when you get a pound dog, you might be in for problems, like you might get stuck with a dog who has respiratory problems because of a genetic malformation. Or worse, you might get stuck with a mutt.

Whoopi, with all due respect, YOU are a mutt. And you, yourself, don’t come from some fancy breeder and you look like you might have less than perfect genes, like most of us. I would think that someone like you, who has a lot in common with us pound dogs, someone who has been through hard times and overcome those hard times, would be a little more understanding of what it means to come from the wrong side of the tracks.

Yeah, you DO have the right to buy a dog. But does that make it right? You know, people had the right to buy slaves in this country too but it wasn’t right. I know you don’t want to be told what to do.

You’re like one of those guys who’ll only date supermodels because they have all the right markings. They’re expensive, they’re beautiful and replaceable and when they get tired of one, they get a new one. In that market, you, Whoopi, wouldn’t stand a chance. You wouldn’t be seen for who you are. You wouldn’t be seen at all. You’d have to hope that some guy wanted a real companion—a friend who would stick by him and love him, would give you a chance instead of insisting on his right to date models.

I am a mutt who was on death row at the pound and I would have died there if everybody thought like you.

Fact: Purebred dogs actually have more genetic malformations than hybrid dogs and that is something that the AKC doesn’t want you to know because it rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars masquerading as a non-profit animal welfare organization, when really, it is a FOR-profit corporation that makes the bulk of its blood money from registering litters from commercial breeding operations.

Whoopi, the concept of “purebred” doesn’t have any more substance than the concept of “pure” German or “pure’” Ugandan. This idea of ‘pure” anything stinks of snobbery and racism. Do you think that if a “purebred” woman from Burkina Faso has a child with a “purebred” man from Austria, that the child is somehow genetically defective? And what if that child, as a result of neglectful parenting or catastrophic circumstances, ends up in an orphanage, are you actually going to use your platform on network television to talk someone out of adopting that child?

If we stick to logic, the same goes for dogs. Racial “purity” is racial talk, it’s racism and it’s wrong, whether you’re talking about non-human animals or human animals. Besides, a lot of the dogs at the pound ARE purebred dogs who were bred in commercial breeding facilities, bought in pet stores and then dumped. Do you think a dog is worthless because he is homeless? Do you think homeless people are worthless too?

What you said is pure garbage and garbage is something I know a lot about. I was considered garbage. I am a mutt who was thrown away like trash, left to die at the pound. And because there are millions of dogs like me and millions of people like you who don’t care, we’ll continue to be thrown out like garbage.

Whoopi, let’s be honest; you don’t really like dogs. If you have to buy a dog to get what you want, you want a brand or an accessory—not a best friend, a dog.

The Sate Department has confirmed on its toll-free emergency consular services number that U.S. citizens being evacuated on U.S. chartered emergency flights out of Egypt will not be allowed to bring pets. Pets will not be permitted on evacuation flights.

The Companion Animal Protection Society is looking into a possible violation of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 which includes household pets in any U.S. evacuation during a disaster. The law mandates that evacuation plans must take into account the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals prior to, during, and following a major disaster or emergency.

The statute was passed after thousands of pet guardians refused to evacuate without their animals in New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The "no pet" policy was decried by the entire animal welfare community, which rushed to deliver aid to abandoned animals during the emergency.

Today, there are no U.S. chartered flights leaving Cairo and U.S. citizens are on standby for flights which might depart on Saturday. According to the State Department, there are seats available today on commercial flights leaving Cairo for the United States. Current customs regulations, however, require that animals flying in cargo or in cabin must have a valid international health certificate completed within ten days of arrival in the U.S..

According to Joyce Tischler, Animal Legal Defense Fund founder and general council, “The tragedy of Americans in the midst of disaster being forced to choose between leaving their beloved animals and remaining in harm’s way spurred significant legislation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, designed to ensure that families can evacuate without leaving behind their four-legged members. Americans consider their pets members of their family; they should not have to choose between fleeing the current violence in Egypt and abandoning their animals .”

There are no current provisions for animals belonging to U.S citizens in Egypt at the time of this reporting.

Shelter dogs who were on the euthanasia list, or "red list" in California shelters welcomed by a team of rescuers for the Companion Animal Protection Society and the Santa Cruz SPCA. In video, Carole Raphaelle Davis, Mireile Rudeau and Jocelyne Dechaume of CAPS.

The rescued dogs were held up at the Nice airport for over three hours because of administrative complications having to do with micro-chips. The dogs had been each micro-chipped twice, once per regulations in CA shelters and again, for entry into the E.U.. This is the first rescue of its kind done in France.

The Companion Animal Protection Society, the Santa Cruz SPCA , the Société Défense des Animaux and Air France airlifted little death row dogs from Los Angeles shelters to Nice, France, where they were welcomed like stars on the famous Promenade des Anglais.

These dogs were to be killed because of the pet overpopulation crisis we are experiencing in the United States. In France, they do have a dog abandonment problem but there is a dearth of small, young adoptable dogs. In the U.S. we kill 5 million companion animals in our shelter system every year.

These dogs were vaccinated, sterilized, micro-chipped and quarantined 21 days before their departure for Nice, France. This effort is an attempt to educate the public about spay/neuter, about the concept of adoption and about puppy mills.

The pet stores of the Côte D'Azur are supplied by puppy mills and the people who could not find small adoptable dogs are buying puppy mill dog in these stores. There is a significant puppy trafficking business in the EU and CAPS is currently investigating the breeders and the pet stores they are supplying on the Riviera.

Riviera Rescue marks the internationalization of the Companion Animal Protection Society, which plans to expand its investigation of puppy mills and pet stores in the EU by working with lawmakers, law enforcement and local animal welfare organizations.
